Mexican singer-songwriter and producer Alex Luna released his first short film today, immersing viewers in the world he created for FUTURALGIA, his debut album.
The short film, also titled ‘FUTURALGIA’, was directed by Pipes and LANDRO WRLD, produced by NVRBORED, with Griz as director of photography and featuring an original screenplay by the artist himself, alongside Max Bayardo and Kevin Rogue.
The audiovisual production personifies nostalgia through five acts, each representing one of the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In each chapter, Luna embodies the songs from FUTURALGIA, the album, and the stories behind them.
The short film opens with a striking image: Luna submerged underwater, motionless, personifying the state of immobility caused by being trapped between emotional reality and a future that never happened—the central theme of his album.
The narrative of the production centers on emotional exploration through psychological therapy, which helps the protagonist untangle the emotional knots he experiences. Each phase of grief transports the viewer to fragments of that reality that never occurred, while interweaving concepts presented in the music videos of the singles and the album cover, which features Luna’s grandfather.
The climax occurs in the final two acts—in the emotional void, the black hole of depression, and the awakening of acceptance, the reunion with self and reality—where the protagonist confronts his nightmares and sees a new path from the light of dawn, a face-to-face encounter with nostalgia.
“The nostalgia for a future that never happened,” Luna says at the short film’s end. “As Borges said, ‘Time forks perpetually toward innumerable futures.’ That’s why each day is an opportunity to sow the seeds of the future we want to build. We want to pursue what we’re passionate about, care for the environment, and say, ‘I love you,’ because we never know when it will be the last time we’re with someone. I would like to thank the Lunada, my team, my family, and my friends for being a part of this. I love you all,” the singer added.
Released in February 2025, in FUTURALGIA, Luna navigates through emotional limbo in an intimate exploration of unfinished stories of love and life. The album, co-written by Luna alongside a talented group of collaborators and producers, puts into lyrics the nostalgia for futures that will never happen.
Across 11 tracks, Luna creates a musical landscape through pop, pop/rock, lo-fi sonorities, and even Mexican regional music, all fused with weightless electronic elements and house rhythms that convey the essence of a future that exists only in dreams.
The album and short film represent the culmination of work that began nearly three years ago, in a conversation with his grandfather, who stars in the second act of the short film—anger—and brings to life the iconic cover of the production: the Alex of the future, listening to his music on the beaches of his native Cancún, while contemplating a reality that never occurred.
As with the album, through the short film, Alex Luna invites the audience to immerse themselves in the complexities of human emotions, guiding them by the hand as they navigate emotional grief through music.
