There are certain artistic gatherings that spark what we call ‘magic’. It rarely happens, but sometimes one plus one equals more than two, and that’s the case here.

Desastres Fabulosos” is the new song by Jorge Drexler and Conociendo Rusia, a classic and captivating track set to be released today May 13, kicking off what is shaping up to be an exciting journey for this song.

Desastres Fabulosos” emerged from the mutual admiration and long friendship between the two artists. Jorge Drexler and Mateo Sujatovich (Conociendo Rusia) got together in September 2024 to co-write the song.

The magic was captured at Sony‘s 5020 studios, in a recording featuring Leiva (on drums!), Meritxell Neddermann (Rhodes and backing vocals) and Jordi Matas (bass and guitars), as well as Jorge and Mateo themselves on vocals and guitars.

The track, produced and mixed by Nico Cotton and mastered by Fred Kevorkian, comes with a beautiful music video directed by Joana Colomar, a regular collaborator of Jorge Drexler.

Mateo said:

Working with Jorge Drexler is a rollercoaster ride that I would go on a thousand times over. It was a beautiful gift to step into his universe, share mine with him, and create a song from scratch together. The result is called ‘Desastres Fabulosos.’ I am eternally grateful to Jorge for opening the doors of his studio and his heart to me”.

Jorge Drexler said:

The day before my birthday, Mateo and I got together at my studio in Chueca, Madrid, to write something. I had long admired Mateo’s beautiful melodic quality. That natural musicality, moreover, when it flows through his voice, becomes a kind of intelligent, direct and accessible beauty that I have wanted to interact with for a long time. Argentina has a dazzling lineage of songwriters in both pop and rock ‘n’ roll, and Mateo embodies many of those virtues and condenses them with an enormous capacity for synthesis, making everything he touches seem beautiful, natural and fluent. Listening to his songs makes you think that great songs have always been there, within reach. I thought that could be a wonderful addition to my world, which sometimes becomes too rhetorical. As always, when you set out to write with someone else, the first thing to do is talk, chat, without any fixed goal…about music, life, anything. We chatted for a while over some mate, and the idea for the song came relatively quickly, based on an anecdote that had come up in the conversation and that was familiar to both of us. We recorded the first demo of the song with my analogic drum machine from the Paleolithic era and we were really happy with it, to be honest. There was clearly something of both of us, deeply ingrained in it. The angle of the story it told was unusual, and we were filled with joy singing that melody: our voices blended together as if we were family. We felt that something was missing, and my son Pablo, who was in the studio, gave us the musical idea for that crescendo intro, which also became the coda. To bring it to life and record it, the great Nico Cotton joined the production team, and we called on two incredible musicians from Catalonia with whom I had worked before: Meritxell Nedderman on keyboards and Jordi Matas (bass and guitar). As an amazing surprise and a 24-carat finishing touch, our admired and beloved Leiva joined us on the drums and tambourines. With the song already recorded, we called my favourite director, Joana Colomar, who shot the beautiful video, which is actually more of a short film than a traditional music video. The talented Macarena Garcia and Javier Dichas brought this somewhat dysfunctional love story to life in the most beautiful way possible: love is a key that connects people, often through their flaws and despite their virtues”.

The music video, starring actors Macarena García and Javier Dichas, is a funny and sensitive account of this couple’s story, with him putting up with the fabulous protagonist’s absent-mindedness. This is a short and perfect story for this song, rich in detail for the most curious viewers.

Desastres Fabulosos” is presented as a single track, as it will not be part of either artist’s albums.

This is an opportunity to work together, to share, and to give free rein to the classic, elegant pop that characterizes their careers.

The song is a straightforward and captivating piece, exquisitely performed by a one-of-a-kind band created for a unique moment and recorded live with meticulous attention to detail.

It is also one of those timeless songs that will remain in the repertoire of both artists for many years to come.
