Ricky Martin etched his name in history at the MTV Video Music Awards by becoming the first artist to receive the newly created “Latin Icon” award at UBS Arena. The honor celebrates artists who have broken barriers, crossed generations, and brought Latin music to global stages.

J Balvin Pays Tribute to Ricky Martin’s Legacy

Before Ricky took the stage, J Balvin delivered a powerful introduction, praising the Puerto Rican superstar as a pioneer of Latin crossover success:

“Ricky Martin didn’t just open the door for Latin music crossover… he helped build it from the ground up. He showed the world that stardom was meant for us. Ricky Martin dared to be visible… and made the world listen.”

A Show-Stopping Performance

Ricky Martin proved why he remains one of the most dynamic performers in the world. With a team of 10 dancers and musicians, he ignited the crowd with timeless hits like “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” “Pégate,” “Vente Pa’ Ca,” “María,”and “Cup of Life.”

The performance, directed by Jamie King (known for working with Madonna, Britney Spears, and Rihanna), featured choreography by Tricia Miranda and Darrion Gallegos, with cutting-edge stage design and lighting that elevated Ricky’s already electrifying stage presence.

Jessica Simpson Presents the Award

Adding to the emotional night, Jessica Simpson presented the award. She recalled her early career when Ricky invited her to join his 1999 “Livin’ La Vida Loca” tour, calling him her inspiration and “one of the most dynamic performers I know.”

Ricky Martin’s Emotional Speech
