Cuban singer-songwriter and Latin GRAMMY winner Lena Burke pays homage to one of the most iconic figures in Latin music history with her new single, “A Celia.” The heartfelt song is an emotional tribute to the life and legacy of Celia Cruz, the “Guarachera de Cuba,” whose voice and spirit continue to inspire generations around the world.
Inspired by a video of the final tribute ever paid to Celia Cruz, Lena wrote “A Celia” as a musical act of gratitude, remembrance, and admiration for a woman who defined Latin music through her authenticity, joy, and strength.
Produced by Lena Burke and multi-award-winning engineer Carlos Álvarez, the track unites a powerhouse lineup of legendary salsa artists:
- Gilberto Santa Rosa – El Caballero de la Salsa
- José Alberto “El Canario”
- La India – La Princesa de la Salsa
- Víctor Manuelle – El Sonero de la Juventud
Adding a special touch, Gonzalo Rubalcaba delivers a breathtaking piano performance. “This time I’m not playing the piano, because when maestro Rubalcaba plays, there’s nothing left to play,” Lena shared. The arrangement, crafted by renowned producer Cucco Peña and recorded at his Altamar Music Studios in Puerto Rico, brings back the vibrant brass sound reminiscent of La Sonora Matancera, the orchestra that helped launch Celia Cruz’s career.
From its first notes, “A Celia” carries the warmth of those who knew and loved the Queen of Salsa. Many of the artists involved had previously performed in tributes to Celia Cruz, giving the song an even deeper layer of authenticity and love. When Omer Pardillo Cid, executor of Celia Cruz’s estate, heard the song, he immediately joined the project. “His support has been invaluable,” Lena said. “Omer keeps Celia’s legacy alive every day, and having his support is a true honor.”
The track, recorded between Puerto Rico, New York, and Miami, including sessions at the iconic Criteria Recording Studios and Crescent Moon Studios courtesy of Emilio Estefan, will be part of Lena’s upcoming studio album, now in its final production stages.
For Lena, this song carries deep family roots. Her grandmother, Elena Burke, one of Cuba’s most beloved voices, shared the stage and friendship with Celia Cruz during their early years in Las Mulatas del Fuego. “This year I’ve had the privilege of joining many events celebrating Celia Cruz’s Centennial, and I wanted to honor her the best way I know through music,” Lena explained.
With “A Celia,” Lena Burke celebrates the eternal power of Celia Cruz’s music and the inspiration she gave to every artist who followed. It’s a song that thanks her for breaking barriers, empowering women, and reminding the world that love, joy, and rhythm can make history.
“A Celia” is now available on all digital platforms.
