LaMezcla sits down with Jayco Elijahh, one of the most exciting new talents emerging from the Latin urban scene. Born in Vieques, Puerto Rico, and now based in Long Island, New York, Jayco blends Caribbean rhythm with New York swagger, bringing a fresh sound that’s quickly capturing the attention of fans across digital platforms.

With his high-energy single “Muévete” setting the tone for his upcoming debut album, Jayco is stepping into the spotlight with purpose, passion, and a growing fanbase ready to dance along.

Today, he joins us for a candid and fun conversation about his inspirations, creative process, and what’s coming next.

Q: You grew up in Vieques, Puerto Rico. How did the island’s music and culture influence the sound you create?

A: The same reason why when anyone goes to Vieques, they say it’s a different vibe. As a kid, I remember the malecón packed with people. Right next to the beach, Different bars, reggaeton blasting, skateboarding, and horses all over the place. The people and life there are different. That’s what I am, and that’s what influences me and my music.

Q: Do you remember the moment you realized you wanted to make music professionally? What sparked that decision?

A: It honestly had to be when I was young. Maybe 6 or 7. My grandma, who raised me, was really religious, and we would often sing together for the church. My grandfather, uncles, and aunts play the guitar, bass, and piano. I had to pick something up, and that was my grandma’s voice. Seeing her sing and everyone singing along. Showing their emotions and love while cheering was amazing. Watching her made me fall in love with music.

Q: You’ve mentioned being inspired by Don Omar, Nicky Jam, and Daddy Yankee. What about their artistry shaped your own approach to music?

A: I always felt that there was a sense of hunger when they made their songs. They became dominant in the game. Ran the charts. Their success was inspiring. From an island to taking over the world, to businessmen. It’s the blueprint.

Q: Moving from Puerto Rico to Long Island is a big shift. How has New York changed or expanded your creative style?

A: I went from making sad songs to vibing and just doing what I want. Like a New Yorker, I could honestly care less. I’m gonna do what I want.

Q: Your single Muévete is full of energy and rhythm. What was going through your mind the day you created it?

A: To be honest, I was recording in a room full of people that I didn’t really know well, and all eyes were on me. They are listening to how I sound and every word as I’m making the song. I’m an artist, I had to show what I could d,o and that’s how muévete came to be.

Q: When you’re crafting a track, do you start with the beat, the melody, or the emotion you want to express?

A: 100% the melody. The melody itself will tell a story that only it and I can tell. From there, you feel the emotion, and everything else falls into place perfectly.

Q: Fans describe your music as the perfect blend of Caribbean flavor and NY attitude. How do you naturally fuse both worlds in the studio?

A: I can never forget where I am from, and I bring that energy and attitude everywhere with the confidence I carry in myself. I’m just being myself

Q: What’s a surprising non-musical inspiration behind your sound that people wouldn’t expect?

A: Actually, MMA. I’ve been training recently, and a lot of those guys have dreams of being a pro fighter. We share big dreams and seeing others work towards their goal in inspiring, no matter what it is they do

Q: With your debut album on the way, what can fans expect from this first body of work?

A: It’s an introduction of JAYCO ELIJAHH. You will hear how I am. The type of person I am. Just me, JAYCO.  And some stuff with a little extra spice to it.

Q: Are there any themes or personal stories in the project that you’re especially excited for listeners to connect with?

A: Yes, there are a couple of stories in there that I know people will relate to. And I’m excited to hear what they will say about it.

Q: If you had to describe your upcoming album using only three words, what would they be?

A: Classy, nasty, and naughty

Q: Is there a track on the album that challenged you creatively or pushed you out of your comfort zone?

A: Yes. I sat there for hours thinking and thinking, but I had a block. I thought about throwing English on it, but I was very hesitant because I am very hard on myself when the songs include English. The story I wanted to tell was there. But the word play from English to Spanish was difficult. The only song that took more than 2 hours to write was a record. Now it’s one of my personal favorites

Q: You’ve mentioned wanting to collaborate with artists like Bad Bunny and Nicky Jam. What would a dream collaboration with either of them sound like?

A: Me on the hook with a verse and adding their skills on the song. It would be the recipe for a hit. You’ll find out when the time comes. It’ll be different but undeniable

Q: If you could perform your music anywhere in the world, from a small venue to a massive festival, where would you choose and why?

A: My home island of Vieques for sure. Everyone knows PR, but not Vieques. I want my island to be known and taken care of. Making it big and performing there would be a huge step towards the bigger goal in mind.

Q: What’s one milestone you were determined to achieve in 2025 as your career continues building?

A: It was actually to become a happier person. And now that I am. The music sounds better, but also shows progression and growth.

Q: How do you see the evolution of Latin urban music influencing your future sound?

A: It’s gonna allow me to experiment and try out styles I haven’t done or haven’t even been discovered yet. And I’m excited for that.

Q: You said, “This is just the beginning.” What message do you want to give to the fans who are discovering you right now?

A: I honestly love everything you all do in supporting me and my career. It’s the start of something new, and I would love to get the chance to grow with everyone. If you were to catch me perform, that’s a memory that you and I both have, and I think that’s pretty cool and special.

Q: What’s the most memorable reaction someone has had to your music, either in person or online?

A: This actually is a special memory to me. In the very beginning, I would blast my music in the shower just to listen and see how it sounds. At the time, my 5-year-old sister heard it and would then come to my room and ask to listen to it over and over again. It definitely made me feel special.

Q: If new fans listen to only one song to understand who Jayco Elijahh is, which track should they choose and why?

A: Muévete definitely. That’s my kind of music. From the melodic singing and vibes. That’s me for sure

Q: Last one, what’s something you’re manifesting for your career that you’re ready to speak into existence?

A: I will be sharing a stage with the biggest artists in the world.
