Grammys has announced a historic addition to the Grammy Awards with the introduction of the Best Latin Song category, set to debut at the 69th Grammy Awards on February 7, 2027.

The new category will recognize the achievement of songwriters behind newly written Latin songs performed predominantly in the Spanish language, marking a significant milestone for one of the fastest-growing and most influential genres in global music.

For decades, Latin artists have earned Grammy recognition across categories such as Best Música Urbana Album, Best Latin Pop Album, Best Tropical Latin Album, and Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album. However, until now, there has never been a dedicated Grammy category specifically honoring the songwriters responsible for creating the songs that fuel the genre’s worldwide success.

The addition of Best Latin Song represents another major step in the evolution of Latin music’s presence within the Recording Academy and reflects the genre’s continued expansion across international markets.

According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., the new category was created in response to the growing impact of Latin music and the need to recognize the creators behind the songs.

“As an organization aiming to honor all music, this new Category is an important step in that direction,” Mason Jr. said. “Latin music is one of the most vibrant and influential forces in the world, but until now, Latin songwriters have not had a dedicated award within the Latin Field.”

The announcement comes during a period of unprecedented success for Spanish-language music. Artists such as Bad Bunny, Karol G, Feid, Peso Pluma, Rauw Alejandro, Myke Towers, and Grupo Frontera have helped push Latin music to new heights globally, while songwriters and producers have increasingly become the driving force behind the genre’s crossover success.

The Recording Academy specifically pointed to the continued growth of Latin music worldwide, citing Bad Bunny’s recent Grammy victory for Album of the Year with an all-Spanish-language project as evidence of the genre’s mainstream impact.

While artists often receive the spotlight, the creation of a dedicated songwriting category shines a light on the individuals working behind the scenes to craft many of today’s biggest Latin hits. Acclaimed songwriters, producers, and composers such as Edgar Barrera, Elena Rose, Keityn, MAG, Mora, Tainy, and countless others have played an instrumental role in shaping the modern Latin music landscape.

The move also aligns with the Recording Academy’s broader efforts to elevate the role of songwriters and composers across the Grammy Awards. Alongside the new category, the Academy announced expanded recognition for songwriters and composers in additional genre categories, further reinforcing their importance within the music ecosystem.

For the Latin music community, the introduction of Best Latin Song represents more than just another trophy. It is an acknowledgment of the creative talent that has helped transform Latin music from a regional genre into a global cultural force.

As the genre continues to break streaming records, sell out stadiums around the world, and influence mainstream music across languages and borders, the Recording Academy’s newest category signals that Latin songwriters are finally receiving the recognition they have long deserved.

The first Grammy Award for Best Latin Song will be presented at the 69th Grammy Awards on February 7, 2027.
